Meet the founder of equitable EDU

Amelia Gamel

1.5 Minute Read

Amelia Leighton, M.Ed., the founder of Equitable EDU LLC, had an awareness and commitment to education, diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) long before it was trending.

As the granddaughter of Italian immigrants to the United States, she was keenly aware of the challenges her grandparents, and other immigrants, encountered as “outsiders.”

Amelia’s view, awareness and understanding expanded through various life and professional experiences which prompted her to be intensely aware of disparities of resources and lack of belonging in education, healthcare and corporate environments.

Amelia was first able to publicly put into practice her commitment to excellence in learning and equitable teaching when she accepted a position as an educator in a K-12 urban school system near Detroit. There, she purposefully and successfully developed and advanced equity-minded teaching.

Within just a couple years she joined higher education as a professor where she developed outstanding equity-minded curriculum, published several academic books, achieved the highest student retention and success outcomes and conceived and implemented nationally recognized success initiatives for Black college students.

Amelia moved into corporate environments where she served as a Diversity and Inclusion lead at a Fortune 500 company and a Talent Strategist at a world recognized space and robotics center.

Amelia’s reputation grew as a nationally known and skilled trainer, a specialist around rapport and relationship building, an expert in retention and advancement strategies, and a DEIB subject matter expert.

In 2015, Amelia realized her dream of owning and operating Equitable EDU, LLC a Training and Development enterprise, that specializes in training and educational resources.
